Wines from Spain launches the inaugural Spanish Wine Week, celebrating the impressive diversity of regions & grapes that make up Spanish viniculture 11th April -17th April 2016
Wines from Spain has organised the very first Spanish Wine Week in Ireland, running in various locations throughout the country from 11th to 17th April.
The inaugural Spanish Wine Week is designed for keen foodies and wine lovers, giving guests the opportunity to feel the passion and learn more about Spanish wines in a series of events – tastings, talks, special restaurant and wine shops offers and competitions –all organised by Wines from Spain.
Beginning with a glass of chilled Albariño with a seafood tapa for just €3 per person at The Cliff Townhouse, from 5-7pm on Monday 11th April, there is a busy schedule of events to celebrate Spanish Wine Week with Wines from Spain running right up until Sunday 17th April.
Tuesday 12th April sees wine writer John Wilson lead a tasting of The Magnificent Seven, Spanish wines under €20, in Whelehans Wines of Loughlinstown from 7.30pm costing €20 per person, while The Port House on South William Street will hold a Flavours of Spain tasting for €30 per person from 7pm. The following day, wine maestro Leslie Williams talks guests through a tasting of the Mediterranean with wine and paella from 7pm at L’Atitude 51, Cork’s beloved wine café, an event that costs €15 per person.
Wednesday 13th April also sees a Spanish wine and tapas evening in The Gables in Foxrock costing €20 per person and running from 7pm to 8.30pm, and Greenman Wines in Terenure hosts Real Spain, a tasting of organic, biodynamic & natural Spanish wines from 7.30pm-9.30pm, with Rafael Salazar from Vinostito Wine Merchants, one of the most renowned wineries of Spanish organics wines. Tickets are available for €25 per person.
The last event on Wednesday 13th April is in the Instituto Cervantes in Dublin city centre, where an evening of Flamenco, Fino & Iberico celebrates the Feria de Abril in Sevilla with a very specific wine from Andalucía– the delicious Fino sherry from the region of Jerez, along with a wonderful authentic flamenco show with dancer Sandra Palomar and the flamenco group of Instituto Cervantes. This event begins at 6.30pm and has limited places so must be booked in advance.
On Thursday 14th April, wine writer Tomas Clancy introduces Hidden Treasures from Spain, a focus on curiosities and the new wine regions accompanied by a tasting of the best tapas in 64 Wine in Glasthule, running from 7.30 to 9pm and costing €30 per person. Leslie Williams is in Galway on the same night, introducing New and Classic Spanish wines from Bierzo and Rioja accompanied by a tasting of the finest Spanish cheeses & meats in Sheridans Winebar at 6 o’clock, for €15 per person, and Ian Brosnan and Ely Bar & Brasserie, IFSC in Dublin hosts a tasting of Perfect Spanish Whites for the Summer at 7 o’clock for €25 per person.
On Friday 15th April, Tomas Clancy is in O’Briens Wine shop in Donnybrook with a Spanish wine tasting & tapas evening for €15 per person (with €10 of this back to spend in the shop).
On Saturday 16th “A Spanish Evening” at La Touche Wines with John Wilson, will be held from 4-8pm, serving a selection of wines from Spain to taste with tapas.
Other participating restaurants include Stanleys Restaurant & Wine Bar who will host a Sherry Happy Hour from Tuesday to Friday, 5 – 7pm, Fallon & Byrne, Zaragoza, Viva España Restaurant and Las Tapas de Lola, so keep an eye out for details of the great events and promotions on offer with them.
Wine stores will also have special offers throughout the week including O’Briens Wines offering 20% off all wines from Spain and spanish wine tastings throughout the week. A loyal Irish customer base has made Spain the third most popular wine producer in this country but there are still plenty of interesting aspects of Spanish viniculture to taste and explore.
