Hot Chocolate Board

Make a fun event and serve hot chocolate for dessert with a delicious help-yourself hot chocolate board. Use our recipe for a real-chocolate hot chocolate, or mix up your own pot of hot chocolate using your favourite hot chocolate mix. You could even just provide a pot of scalded milk and let everyone mix their own hot chocolate!

Serve inclusions that can be used to flavour your drink, like peeled orange zest, crushed candy canes, cinnamon sticks or (for the adults) a tipple like Baileys, brandy, Kahlua, or whatever else you can think of. Then include ingredients that you can top off your hot chocolate, like whipped cream, caramel sauce, warmed chocolate hazelnut spread, and sprinkles. The rest of the board is for nibbling, so pack it with your favourite biscuits, sweet treats and chocolates, bonus if they’re themed for the event!

For the hot chocolate

  • 1 litre milk of your choice
  • 80g 70% dark chocolate, finely chopped or grated
  • 80g milk chocolate, finely chopped or grated

Optional extras for flavour

  • Strips of orange peel
  • Crushed candy canes
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Baileys, brandy, Kahlua, Frangelico etc.
  • Optional extras to top off
  • Whipped cream
  • Warmed chocolate hazelnut spread
  • Caramel sauce
  • Sprinkles
  • Marshmallows

Optional nibbles

  • Your favourite biscuits (Oreos, shortbread, choc chip cookies, gingerbread men etc.)
  • Fudge
  • Toffees
  • Chocolate fingers
  • Various chocolates and other sweet treats

How to create your hot chocolate board

  1. For the hot chocolate, pour milk into a large saucepan and heat over medium high heat, stirring occasionally, just until it starts to steam and boil around the edges.
  2. Remove from heat and add the chocolate, stir until chocolate has completely melted. Serve hot.
  3. To assemble the board, place a few smaller bowls onto a large serving tray, fill these with smaller ingredients like sprinkles, mini marshmallows, chopped chocolate, crushed candy canes, etc. and add spoons where needed. You’ll also need small bowls or jugs for things like caramel sauce etc.
  4. Working your way around the board, place nibbles in groups, filling in gaps with smaller nibbles, until the board is completely covered with delicious treats.
  5. If your serving tray or board is not big enough, that’s ok, use smaller bowls and place them around and about the main board with goodies.
