Oh party season we love you, though we don’t love how you make us feel on a work morning. If you are headed into work today feeling less than spritely, then tuck into our 5 foods to cure that hangover and that will make you feel (almost) normal.

Paul O’Callaghan’s Super Smoothies are a good idea right now

Step One: Rehydrate
What you need more than anything right now is to rehydrate yourself. Steer clear of caffeine, at least for right now, because (as you know) it’s counter-intuitive to what you need right now. You need to replace salt and sugars, so a sachet of Diorolyte or a sports drink promising to replenish electrolytes is just the job. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to rehydrate with nutrients. We recommend a smoothie or a juice; just steer clear of anything overtly acidic like strawberries or oranges as they will upset your tummy.

Step Two: Bulk Up On Potassium
And that means bananas. The wonder food of the hungover, these guys are amazing. They are gentle on the stomach, replace electrolytes and are a super fast way to get potassium into the body. Lovely.

Step Three: Pass The Protein
No, that doesn’t mean a giant fry, unfortunately. It means eggs. Eggs are the friend of the hangover for many reasons. They are easily digested, gentle on the tummy and thanks to being packed with a thing called cysteine, mop up alcohol’s toxins as the move through the body.

Step Four: Lunch Is Up
We know, the power of chips is manifold, but if you want to get through today, you’ll listen to us. Today you are having soup, and maybe a wholegrain sandwich. A well seasoned soup will replenish salts lost last night, and chicken soup has well known healing abilities. Tomato soup is an easy and delicious way to rehydrate and replace lost minerals and salts.

Step Five: Make Ginger Your Bestie
When thinking about dinner tonight, make sure you include ginger. It’s the best way to finish your hangover day, boosting a post-drink digestive system, helping to ease constipation, gas, bloating, indigestion, and even vomiting. A quick stir fry might be all you’re able to throw together tonight, but by loading it with ginger, you are truly doing yourself and your body a favour. Thank us tomorrow!
