Focus Friday: Killer Sandwich
Fri Nov 21 2014
Killer Sandwich is the genius lunch offering from Conor Stevens, copywriter, and Siobhán O’Donovan. As brand consultants Mr & Mrs Stevens, this pair know their onions, and what started as a case study for their business has blown into one of the foodie favorites of 2014. The concept is deliciously underground. On a Wednesday Killer Sandwich tweets a one item menu, along with price and pick up location, and on a Friday those who have pre-ordered pick up their delicious lunch. Simples. And Delicious. We caught up with Mr & Mrs Stevens to find out what goes on behind the scenes at Killer Sandwich.
How did you come up with the idea?
We are creative brand consultants, Mr & Mrs Stevens, with a huge interest in food. We devised Killer Sandwich as a project to demonstrate our skills in branding and brand building to food brands. We also love Twitter and wanted to explore the possibilities and limits of the platform for food supply. We felt that it was time for the sandwich to be rehabilitated and given the respect it deserves and has in New York. Putting the three together, we came up with Killer Sandwich.
Why did you choose Twitter as your ordering platform?
Twitter felt right for Killer Sandwich in terms of tone. Killer Sandwich is smart, direct, no-nonsense. The 160 character limit and fast pace of the Twitter experience is a good fit.
Who makes the sandwiches and how do you come up with the sandwich filling combinations?
We make everything (except the bread) whether it’s smoking pork, pickling mountains of carrot, whipping up mayo. The combinations are inspired by classic sandwiches, seasonal ingredients and Killer twists. Our focus is really entirely on ‘does it taste good’. Seasoning is King.
Are you solely based in Dublin? Do have plans to expand?
As we said, Killer Sandwich was supposed to be just a side project for us, designed to build a case-study for our business Mr & Mrs Stevens. A couple of months turned into a year and now we’re setting up meetings with food producers who might be right to take over the production for us. If we find the right people we may then be in a position to expand the Killer concept.
