Review: Staple Foods

Wed Jul 15 2015

Having heard so many great things about Staple Foods, the renounced healthy cafe that focuses on making healthy eating more accessible, it was about time for me to check it out myself. They focus on two of the main modern diets; paleo or caveman style eating and the vegan, dairy free diet. They serve up lunch, brunch and dinner as well as some pressed juices.

I arrived at 12 noon just as they opened so luckily I had my pick of seats. I sat by the window on an old red leather couch with a reclaimed tree trunk as my table. The décor, was pretty much all reclaimed including chairs, old lamps and couches  all of which gave the place real character.

I opted for the Vegan super food salad with kale, spinach, sprouted cress, red quinoa, sunflower & pumpkin seeds, cashew nuts, pomegranate seeds & avocado which was served with a raspberry & lemon dressing with falafel. It was a delight to tuck into a healthy salad, which tasted so great that you don’t miss the carbohydrates. Fresh and zingy, the salad and the homemade falafel was coated in sesame seeds and this was the wow factor for me.

The cost of the salad was €14.50 which I thought was a little bit pricey at first but when you see the sizes of the portions with all the yummy ingredients, it is most definitely worth it. As the portions were so big I was unable to finish the salad and the staff kindly packed it up for me to take away. As I was leaving I picked up two more salads to bring home for dinner – another super food salad but with chicken instead of the falafel. The other choice was roast chicken which came with a celeriac & toasted nut slaw along with red pepper pesto, both of which tasted just as good.

This was definitely one of the best salads I have ever eaten and I look forward to my next visit.

That’s not all –  if you fancy something sweet there is a range of naturally sweet desserts, all made with natural ingredients and no refined sugar. It would be rude not to leave with out a little treat so I wrapped up my visit by indulging in a coconut chocolate brownie. Mmmm.. delicious!
