Catherine Fulvio Tastes Like Home

Catherine Fulvio, food writer and owner of Ballyknocken House & Cookery School continues to be a rising star in Ireland’s culinary scene with her latest TV series airing on RTE One on a Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm.

Tonight on episode 3 of Tastes Like Home with Catherine Fulvio, she will visit Cape Town, South Africa and Sligo Town, Ireland.

In this new format TV series, Catherine gets to combine her two passions – food and travel – resulting in a colourful and informative culinary tour of six very diverse destinations and this week Catherine is off to Capetown.

Capetonians have a love affair with food, and the abundance of great eateries and markets serving up a variety of flavours from French colonial to Cape Malay, not to mention the world class wines all available in and around the city, plays testament to this.

During this week’s episode Catherine visits:

Graff Wine Estate in Stellenbosch – This world-leading destination for wine, art and hospitality in an unrivalled setting. Designed with the discerning global traveler in mind, savour breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the Stellenbosch Valley.

Catherine enjoys a meal of Beetroot Cured Salmon with Roasted Chestnuts; Ostrich Fillet with Bone Marrow Crumble followed by a selection of desserts and wine pairing – jealous?

Victoria & Albert Waterfront (V&A) – Established in 1988, the V&A Waterfront is one of Africa’s most visited destinations with 24 million visitors annually. It is situated in the oldest working harbor in the southern hemisphere, with the iconic Table Mountain as its backdrop and extensive views of the ocean, city bowl and mountain peaks.

Cape Wheel – Catherine takes a ride on the Cape Wheel for the most amazing panaromic views. 

V&A Market for the best of Capetown & South African Cuisine

The V&A Food Market holds its position as Cape Town’s leading retail food store and the only Food Market operating 7 days a week

  1. Visits “Africa’s Best” Real food for real working people. Samp and Beans; Mieliepap and Stew served with kale and cabbage.
  2. Stokkiesdraai Biltong is a family owned business that makes biltong using only meat from natural grazing cattle not fed hormones and growth stimulants.Their products include Beef, Game and Ostrich Biltong. Their famous Ostrich sausages are made with Olive Oil too!

Kalky’s Restaurant – finally before visiting the family to learns how to prepare Bernice’s favourite dish, Sugar Bean Curry, she meet her mother, Lorraine, in Kalky’s, an old-school fish and chips shop where Catherine tried local fish Snoek (similar to Baracuda).  The queue on weekends attests to the tastiness of the food.

The two dishes cooked for the South African family living in Sligo Ireland (this is a reverse show) are a Sugar Bean Curry & Sambal and Milk Tart.
