Cooking like a pro has many benefits; most of which are time saving. If you apply restaurant rules to your home kitchen, you’ll find life so much easier, and be able to create amazing dishes, with much less stress. Of course, if you are stretched for time, the old adage of choosing quick recipes with fewer ingredients still applies, but with our handy hints, you’ll find your cooking space to be a wonderous adventureland from now on!
Always begin with a clean kitchen. This sounds silly, but if you have a clean space you will work in a more methodical way. Clear away kitchen top utensils that you don’t need to maximise the amount of counter space you have to work on.
Organise everything before you begin. Lay out all the ingredients you need within easy reach, along with all of the pots, pans and utensils you will need for the recipe.
Sharpen your knives before you begin. This will speed up your preparation and ensure more precision when it comes to prepping meat and vegetables.
Prep your veggies before you start cooking. Mise en place is essential in a professional kitchen, and entails prepping all ingredients to the point of cooking. This is the ultimate tool of the professional chef, and one that can easily be incorporated into any home kitchen.
Clean as you go. This not only saves time, but clears space for you to work as you go through the recipe.
Read the recipe. Be clear on what can be prepared in advance, and if so, do it ahead of time to save time.
