What’s In Your Basket: Alison Curtis

Sat Feb 21 2015

Today radio broadcaster and all round lovely person Alison Curtis tells us about shopping for her family, and gives us a sneak peek inside her super-tidy fridge…

Online or In Store? Which works for you?
I have never bought food online, I always go to the shops. Like the majority of Irish people now I do a split shop between Lidl/Aldi and a Tesco stop off.

What five items are always on your list?
Apples, pears, Greek yoghurt, broccoli and vanilla ice cream (for my daughter!)

How have your shopping habits changed over the last five years?
I have moved away from doing big massive shops to a more continental idea of a few small shops across the week. I find it means I get fresh food and really cut down on the waste.

What’s your staple dinner dish, on the menu every week?
I am a vegetarian and my husband and daughter aren’t. So I would often do a pasta/rice dish with loads of veggies then add chicken or meat to it after. I’ve really gotten into Spanish cooking lately and doing lots of tortillas and paellas. Yum!

What kind of food did you grow up with?
I grew up with a very 80’s North American style diet, so a lot of sauces with dishes. A lot of chicken a la king, fish fingers and rice dishes. My parents had their work cut out though as even then I didn’t like meat and was a picky eater!

Are you health conscious? How does this affect your store cupboard?
Yes I would be, but with a sweet tooth! I would keep an eye on fat content mostly and salt in food. I have to make sure I get enough protein too. I would always have beans and chickpeas in my cupboard and peas in the freezer.

What’s in your fridge right now (please take a picture!)
Grapes, feta cheese, Greek yoghurt, smoothies, cottage cheese, lettuce, carrots, broccoli, soy sauce, butter and 1 egg!

What did you have for breakfast, lunch and dinner yesterday?
I started making my own granola and love it. So breakfast is granola with fruit and yoghurt and coffee. Lunch was pita with carrot and cheese. Dinner was noodles with broccoli, onion, mushroom and egg.
