Milano Winner

Thu Oct 08 2015

Milano Announces Dublin winner.

For only the second time in its 20 year history, a devoted customer is having their idea for a new pizza featured on the Milano menu. From 6 October, customers can order the Romana Amore, the winning recipe in Milano’s Create Your New Favourite competition. The creator of the new pizza, Billy Twamley from Sandyford in Dublin 16, has also won €10,000 and a holiday to the Amalfi coast.

Exceeding all expectations, thousands of people entered the competition online, choosing from a list of 250 ingredients including gluten-free and vegan toppings. Entries were whittled down by a panel of judges to just five before going to the public vote.

Billy’s pizza uses a combination of smoky chorizo and creamy goat’s cheese but with a spicy kick. With peppadew and roasted red and yellow peppers, this pizza is both colourful and flavoursome, celebrating smoky chorizo with savoury goat’s cheese. It comes on a thin and crispy Romana base and is finished with fresh rocket and shaved Gran Milano, giving the Romana Amore a final hit of flavour.

Billy joined the pizzaiolos at Milano Dundrum for the first, exclusive taste of his pizza and said, “I still can’t believe I won and I’m really looking forward to seeing my pizza on the Milano’s menu. All the ingredients I chose are ones that I personally enjoy on a pizza and I’m glad that so many people agreed with me. I can’t wait to visit and experience the Amalfi Coast, Italian food is my favourite cuisine.’’

Head of Menu at PizzaExpress, Holly Davies, said, “Everyone has their favourite pizza when they visit Milano and as we celebrate our 20th birthday, it feels right that a true Milano pizza fan has created, what could be, a new favourite. Over the years we’ve invented some true classics and Billy’s entry has the makings of another classic. If our customers like it as much as we do, it could be on the menu for the next 20 years.”

Kids were also invited to join in the fun by drawing a picture of what they’d like to find on a pizza on a Create Your New Favourite activity sheet. A winner was selected by the manager of each of Milano’s 14 restaurants, receiving a Kids Pizza Making Party for them and seven friends.

During the competition, spinach was revealed as the nation’s favourite pizza topping, beating old favourites such as pepperoni. Perhaps unsurprisingly, mushy peas and Brussels sprouts were the least popular options.
