Yeats Tea at The Merrion

In celebration of the 150 anniversary of the birth of Ireland’s most famous poet, W.B. Yeats, The Merrion Hotel Dublin has announced a ‘Yeats Season’ throughout June 2015 letting guests enjoy a Yeats-inspired Afternoon Tea and a new signature Clover Club cocktail. Born in Dublin on 13 June 1865, W.B Yeats went on to become one of the foremost figures of 20th Century literature.

In true Merrion style, Pastry Chef Paul Kelly has created an intelligent Afternoon Tea imagined through the eyes of W.B. Yeats. Guests can discover The Life and Works of William Butler Yeats exhibition at The National Library of Ireland – just around the corner from The Merrion – before returning to the hotel for tea. Those with a strong interest in the writer can make the most of a private Yeats tour of Dublin. The Yeats Tea will feature three irresistible pastries after sandwiches and
scones, inspired by his poetry, his persona and his passions.

After tea – and before dinner – guests can raise a toast to the great poet with one of his favourite tipples – a perfectly pink Clover Club. A delicious concoction of gin, lemon juice, raspberry syrup and egg white, the Clover Club is the perfect tipple for June – best enjoyed in the late afternoon sun amid the roses in The Merrion’s
gardens.

According to an anecdote, in 1911 Yeats was in New York with a touring company of actors from Dublin’s Abbey Theatre. At a lunch held in his honour at the Waldorf Hotel, Yeats was given his first taste of a Clover Club. The story goes that he liked it so much that rather than moving on to drink wine with his fellow guests, Yeats called for more cocktails throughout the meal.

150 YEARS OF YEATS stays are from €217 per person based on two sharing an overnight stay in a Standard Room on a B&B basis, with Yeats Tea for two and a Clover Club Cocktail each. A 2 hour private Yeats tour of Dublin is an optional extra and costs €150 for two. Valid for stays 1-30 June 2015.
