Ingredients

  • 225g plain flour
  • 14g yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 15g butter
  • 1/2tsp sugar
  • 1/2tsp salt
  • 118ml milk

Method

  • 1. Sift together flour and salt.
  • 2. Rub in the butter and put aside on top of cooker to warm.
  • 3. Cream together the yeast and sugar and add to warmed milk and beaten egg. Add the liquid to the flour, beat and knead thoroughly.
  • 4. Cover and stand in a warm place.
  • 5. Allow to rise for one hour.
  • 6. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4.
  • 7. Form into rolls or plaits. Put onto a greased proof shelf for a further 10 minutes.
  • 8. Take out and brush with a beaten egg and bake for a further 15 minutes in the oven.
